Virgin Islands timeshares hurricane damage by Irma and Maria in 2017 was devastating. The islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix were left without power and no working utilities.
September of 2017 in the Virgin Islands was a true disaster. Hurricane Irma, a category 5 storm, slammed the USVI destroying homes, hotels, utilities, and most other structures. Two weeks later, Hurricane Maria, another cat 5 hurricane, flooded what was left behind after Irma. At the time the hurricane damage was said to be catastrophic. It has been almost a year now since those storms.
Much of the islands are still without power and at least 50% of the hotels and timeshares are not repaired. St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix have few rooms to accommodate tourists. Many of the rooms are occupied by relief and construction workers.
The cruise industry completely bypassed the islands and has depressed the economy further. FEMA is still very active there with FEMA’s Emergency Home Repair program replacing windows and roofs. But the logistics of repairing mountainous island homes and resorts are tough. And, according to the governor, recovery is still 5 to 7 years away.
And the timeshare resorts? The Virgin Island timeshares suffered their fair share of damage from Maria and Irma. A few are back up and running at roughly half of their capacity. Many are still without power but are attempting to get restoration work done for when the lights come back on. I can also imagine that a few will never be rebuilt.
Contacting your timeshare in Virgin Islands by telephone is sketchy at best. I you haven’t already done so, find their home webpage for information. If that fails RCI or II may have contact information on their resort guide pages on the web.
A recent new article from the islands said that Bluebeard’s Castle is still without power. Their website has this announcement on their front page:
Due to damage from Hurricane Irma and Maria, Bluebeard’s Castle Resort is currently closed to owners and guests while we make the necessary repairs to return your resort to a safe and beautiful property.
At this time, we anticipate being closed throughout 2018. Thank you for your patience and support during the renovations. We look forward to opening and your resort being better than ever.
The bottom line for you is that there was a great loss of materials and manpower to get your timeshare restored. Rebuilding your timeshare will be a long process. There will almost certainly be a large assessment fee.
If before this you were thinking of selling or giving away your timeshare now would be a good time to part with it. Sell your timeshare now and beat the rush!
