What is a Timeshare Lockout?

During a timeshare sales presentation a lot of information is given to a prospective buyer. Sometimes this information can be confusing. Especially if it is the first presentation attended. When they talk about a timeshare lockout unit (sometimes called lockoff) it can really get confusing.

A timeshare lockout is a unit that can be divided in two. That’s the easy part.

As you would find in a hotel for example, two rooms can be joined simply by putting a door in the dividing wall. In a timeshare there are a variety of ways to split it up with separate entrances, separate kitchens, laundry, and balconies. Most often you will see a lockout unit start off as a two bedroom unit that can be split into two separate one bedroom units. Or, with a different floor plan, a one bedroom unit and a studio unit.

There are many different ways they make the floor plan work out so it can be split.

How do you use it?

You have quite a few options with a timeshare lockout unit. For example you can take your two bedroom lockout and just use it as a whole two bedroom timeshare for your vacation. Or, you could take two vacation weeks by splitting them into two different one bedroom units. You could also rent out one side of the lockout and use the other side for yourself.

Another way to benefit from a timeshare lockoff is if you have a biannual timeshare – every other year. You could go every year if you just use half of your timeshare by using the lockout option. Additional fees will probably apply.

So your usage options have greatly multiplied with a timeshare lockout.
