What is an “RCI Timeshare?” The timeshare industry has a language all its’ own. And for those who are just beginning to investigate timeshares, it can get confusing.
The phrase RCI Timeshare is sometimes used in reference to a timeshare that is part of the network of timeshares exchanged by RCI. And the acronym? In 1974 Resort Condominiums International was founded by Jon and Christel DeHaan. RCI is a timeshare exchange broker. And today it simply goes by the name RCI.
RCI is the largest timeshare exchange broker in the world. Roughly 3.8 million people bank their weeks with RCI or own RCI points. 4,300 timeshare resorts are affiliated with RCI in 110 countries.
Simply put, you can “bank” your week with RCI and get another week in another location. It sounds simple enough.
Now there is a distinction between RCI weeks and RCI points.
RCI TIMESHARE WEEK
An RCI week is a timeshare week in the traditional sense. You would bank your specific week and get a similar week in exchange. The weeks are categorized into higher and more desirable seasons of the year such as “red” or “platinum” and the less desirable seasons as “white” or “bronze”. In addition, the location and quality of your timeshare will determine its value when you trade it for another.
For example, if you bank an off season week in an average location you cannot expect to receive a red season week in Hawaii. This goes contrary to what you may have been told that “you can go anywhere if you just bank your week!” In the very beginning of timeshare sales the ability to bank your week and select any other resort has been the biggest selling point of timeshares.
RCI points are used to purchase either a week at a resort, a few nights, cruises, hotel discounts, airfare deals, and numerous other vacation products. And, as you can imagine, the more points you own the more elaborate and desirable locations you can purchase with the points.
In recent years there has been a concerted effort to convert traditional timeshare week owners to RCI points. The additional flexibility of points has been the major advantage of points. The drawback is the continuous need to buy more and more points. And along with more points come higher annual fees.
So what is better, RCI timeshare weeks or RCI Points? That is entirely up to you. If you are satisfied with the same week each year at your home resort then you will be happy with the RCI timeshare week. If you don’t mind the extra cost and need the flexibility of more options then RCI Points would work best in your situation.
