That was the one word you could use to describe Acapulco, Mexico. At least you could do that 20, 30 40, 50 years ago.
Don’t even ask. The once hottest vacation spot on this side of the globe, is now a hot bed of violence, kidnappings, and murder. And it is not getting much better. Last September, there was an abduction and suspected massacre of 43 student teachers who disappeared. Since then there have been protests by educators and clashes between them and police.
Just last month during a protest, one of protesters drove a bus into a line of police officers seriously injuring seven officers. Following the incident, five protesters were injured and a 65 year old teacher was killed while the police were breaking up the protest.
Also earlier this month, a suspected drug cartel boss known as ‘The Fat One’ was arrested by police in Mexico. (source) “Mexican police confirmed the arrest of the suspected leader of the Independent Cartel of Acapulco – or Cártel Independiente de Acapulco – in the town of Merida on the country’s east coast.”
Still with the police and federal authorities arresting the cartel leadership, our own government is warning US citizens to stay away from Acapulco. And for very good reasons.
It is too bad that some of the finest beaches and beautiful scenery is being isolated by resident violence.
Mayan Palace and Grand Mayan Acapulco are two of the most beautiful locations and resorts in Acapulco. I cannot even make a guess as to how their occupancy rate is, but just getting there could be an issue for some timeshare owners. Many of the daily protests are at the airport – blocking traffic. Timeshare resorts in the affected area include Vidafel Mayan Palace-Acapulco, PHC at Acapulco Playa, Grand Mayan Acapulco, Fiesta Americana Condesa.
I’d still say there are many locations in Mexico that are safe for travel and are worth looking at for a great vacation. Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Cozumel, and others are safe and welcoming.
